John Detro PA-C, Regenerative Medicine Specialist
Colonel John Detro (JD) is a Regenerative Medicine Specialist practicing at LeHeal Biogenix in Tampa, FL He was the Command Surgeon, United States Special Operations Command, MacDill AFB, Florida. In this capacity, he served as the primary advisor to the Commander and Staff, TSOC and Component Surgeons to synchronize all aspects of health service support across a global area of responsibility. He oversees the health and welfare of Special Operations Forces supporting persistent and networked geographic combatant command operations and the training and equipping of over 2,700 special operations medics.
Colonel Detro is a native of Luna Pier, Michigan and entered the military as an enlisted Combat Medical Specialist, deploying to Operation Desert Storm. He received his commission through the Army Physician Assistant Program and has served with and deployed as Physician Assistant in 75th Ranger Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Cavalry Division, 44th Medical Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, and Joint Special Operations Command. He has commanded both the 240th Forward Surgical Team (Airborne) and the 187th Medical Battalion in addition to assignments as an Interservice PA Program instructor, XVIII Airborne Corps PA, Task Force Bragg Surgeon, Office of the Army Surgeon General while simultaneously serving as The Surgeon General’s PA Consultant. Colonel Detro’s last assignments were as the Chief, Leader Development Branch then Chief, Army Medical Specialist Corps at U.S. Army Human Resources Command.
Colonel Detro’s military professional education includes the Army Orthopedic PA Program, Intermediate Level Education Resident Course, Army Ranger School, Army Medical Department Flight Surgeon Course, Army Parachutist and Jumpmaster Courses, Forward Surgical Team Commanders Course, Army Medical Department Executive Skills Course, Defense Strategy Course, Army Medical Department Iron Majors Week and the U.S. Army War College.
He holds bachelor’s degrees in physician assistant studies and biology/chemistry, Master’s degrees in Strategic Studies, Adult Education, and Physician Assistant Studies and a Doctorate in Medical Science with a concentration in Administrative Medicine from Lynchburg University.
Colonel Detro has completed seven combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster and Valor device, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with seven oak leaf clusters and two Valor devices, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal with five oak leaf clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. He has earned the Combat Medical Badge, Expert Field Medical Badge, Flight Surgeon Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, and Ranger Tab. He is a member of the Army Medical Department Order of Military Medical Merit, Order of Saint Maurice, Order of the Combat Spur, and Order of the Purple Heart. He was the 2018 recipient of the American Academy of Physician Assistants Military Service PA of the Year award. Colonel Detro has been married to Moraima (Maria) Detro for 30 years and they have three children and four grandchildren (Current as of May 2023).
